Ask The Expert: What can happen if my incontinence care product does not adequately protect my skin?

Q: What can happen if my incontinence care product does not adequately protect my skin? What can I do to prevent this from happening?

Answer

Incontinence is a common condition that affects over 46 million people in the U.S. For those managing heavy to severe forms of incontinence, moisture left on their skin for too long can lead to itchy and annoying rashes and painful sores. Some specific skin conditions related to incontinence include:

  • MASD (Moisture-Associated Skin Damage)
  • IAD (Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis)
  • Pressure Injuries and Bed Sores

These skin issues can happen quickly – one study found that skin breakdown could be seen after just 15 minutes of exposure to moisture. In addition, these conditions can further lead to growth of bacteria and potentially serious infection, such as urinary tract infections.

The ideal treatment for these potentially dangerous medical situations is to prevent any moisture buildup from occurring in the first place. This can be achieved by choosing high-quality absorbent products that keep skin dry.

Tranquility® Incontinence Products are specially designed with top layers that quickly wick liquid away from the skin and unique Kufguard® leg cuffs that direct excess fluid into a superabsorbent core, where it gets locked in so it can’t leak back out onto the skin. Tranquility also offers a wide range of products with breathable sides and 100% breathable materials, allowing warm, moist air to escape and fresh, cool air to circulate. Finally, Tranquility also provides a wide range of products in bariatric sizes for individuals of larger stature, as well as hard-to-find youth sizes to bridge the gap between toddler pull-ons and adult-sized products, providing the perfect fit for all body types and helping wearers avoid leaks and skin exposure to moisture.

  1. I have a neurogenic bladder caused by a Failed Back Surgery Syndrome. I self-cathed for years then my eyes became worse and I couldn’t see to cath so I got a suprapubic catheter. I had so much trouble with blood clots, sediment, and pain when it was changed that I changed to a Foley catheter. I still have blood clots and sediment so bad that it has to be changed every 2 weeks. I am just wondering if you have any suggestions about what I can do to make it easier. If I don’t have a catheter, I wet all over myself. Thanks for any comments.

  2. Thanks for sharing this information with us. Using inadequate incontinence products can lead to skin irritation, rashes, and infections. Proper protection is key to maintaining healthy skin!

Ask The Expert: From A Doctor’s Perspective What Are Some Common Questions You Hear?

If you’ve ever sneezed and held your breath hoping for the best, you’re not alone. Bladder leaks, pelvic floor issues, and the constellation of symptoms that go with them are incredibly common — and incredibly under-discussed. We sat down with two of our favorite experts who are changing the bladder leak conversation: Dr. Barbara Frank, Attn: Grace medical advisor and board certified OB/GYN, and Dr. Sara Reardon, pelvic floor physical therapist (and the woman your pelvic floor has been waiting to meet). They took turns asking each other the questions their patients ask most — and answered them with the same candor they bring to the exam room. They cover everything from how to prepare for postpartum, to what question to ask your own pelvic floor PT, to how to manage incontinence during menopause. This is a knowledge drop you don’t want to miss.

How Aging Changes Bladder Control — What Most People Don’t Expect

As an RN who’s worked in geriatrics for over 14 years, I know first hand that changes in bladder control can be a common part of aging. However, what I’ve also learned is that the treatment and management of these changes differ depending on whether they are due to aging or other conditions.
If you’re experiencing more frequent trips to the bathroom or sudden, intense urges to urinate, you might be wondering what is going on and what you can do about it. Let’s talk through some of the changes that might be going on in your body and how you can be better prepared to manage your bladder control.
