New To Incontinence? This Is What You Will Need.

Starting the journey of incontinence or becoming a caregiver for someone with incontinence can be overwhelming. It’s hard to know where to start and what products to buy. While diapers or pull-ups are essential, there are other products that you should consider as well. Read along as we introduce you to a variety of products that could help you along the way.

Underpads

Underpads, also known as Chux, are an essential product for anyone dealing with incontinence or caring for someone who does. These versatile pads act as a protective barrier, shielding beds, chairs, and other surfaces from leaks and bodily fluids. With both disposable and reusable options available, there is a wide range of sizes and absorbencies to choose from, ensuring that you find the perfect fit for your needs.

Disposable underpads are designed for maximum comfort and convenience. They feature a soft top layer that feels gentle against the skin, providing a comfortable experience for the user. The super absorbent core quickly locks away moisture, keeping the surface dry and preventing any discomfort. Additionally, disposable underpads have a moisture-proof backsheet that acts as a barrier, ensuring that no fluid passes through and reaches the underlying surface. This feature is particularly helpful in preventing stains and maintaining the cleanliness of your furniture or bedding.

On the other hand, reusable underpads offer a more sustainable option. Made from soft, cloth-like materials, these underpads are not only durable but also environmentally friendly. After use, simply toss them into the washing machine, and they are ready to be used again. This makes them a cost-effective choice in the long run, as you won’t need to constantly purchase disposable underpads. It is recommended to have 2-3 reusable underpads in rotation, allowing you to have a fresh pad while others are being laundered.

Gloves

Gloves are also considered an essential item. When assisting in changing a loved one, it’s important to have gloves on hand for hygiene and protection. There are 3 basic types of gloves: Nitrile, Vinyl, and Latex.

Vinyl

Vinyl gloves may not offer the same level of durability as nitrile or latex gloves, but they are an excellent option for non-hazardous and low-infection environments. Their cost efficiency makes them particularly suitable for situations where gloves need to be frequently changed or used, such as changing incontinence products multiple times a day.

Nitrile

Nitrile gloves are considered the strongest disposable gloves, while still providing a level of flexibility. They are widely recognized as the gold standard for gloves, particularly in high-risk situations like handling infectious materials or working with needles. However, it’s worth noting that some individuals may experience a slight restriction of movement when using nitrile gloves, which is especially important to consider when working with small or fine instruments. Additionally, it’s important to keep in mind that nitrile gloves tend to be the most expensive option among disposable gloves.

Latex

The primary purpose of latex gloves is to provide protection against blood-borne pathogens, chemicals, and other biohazards. Latex gloves are an excellent choice for handling biological materials or water-based solutions due to their durability and comfort. However, it’s important to note that when working with sharp objects, latex gloves may not offer adequate protection and can easily tear without detection.

Booster Pads

Booster pads are a fantastic addition to your incontinence protection routine. These pads provide an extra layer of security when used alongside adult diapers or disposable incontinence underwear. With their innovative flow-through backing, these pads efficiently absorb fluid and fill up to capacity. Any remaining fluid is then transferred into the adult diaper or disposable underwear, boosting absorption by up to 20 ounces. This not only gives you peace of mind, but it also extends wear time and reduces the need for frequent changes. To ensure a comfortable and leak-free experience, be sure to carefully position the booster pad within the protective underwear or diaper. And don’t forget, choosing the right size booster pads is crucial for optimal fit and comfort.

Skin Care Products

Perineal Cleansers

Perineal cleansers are specially formulated to keep the perineum ( the tiny patch of sensitive skin between your genitals) clean without drying out the skin. They can eliminate fecal or urine matter, prevent the build-up of fungi and bacteria, and even contain odor elimination formulas.

Moisturizing Cream Or Lotion

Moisturizing cream or lotion is essential for preventing dry skin, as it strengthens the skin’s natural barrier. Look for ingredients like Zinc, vitamin E, and Aloe vera, which have proven benefits for incontinence-related skin conditions.

Barrier Cream Or Ointments

Barrier creams or ointments are specifically formulated to shield the skin from irritants like urine, stool, or excessive moisture. By creating a protective layer on the outer skin, they effectively seal and safeguard against exposure to these irritants while retaining moisture. It is important to apply barrier cream after moisturizer or lotion to effectively lock in hydration. A&D ointment, which contains vitamins A & D, is a popular type of barrier or skin protectant.

Antibacterial Or Antifungal

While it is not essential to use antibacterial or antifungal creams on a daily basis, they can be quite beneficial in treating ongoing rashes, itchiness, or redness that may be caused by bacterial or fungal infections.

Odor Eliminator

During this period, it may be necessary to address any odor-related concerns. In such cases, it is recommended to use biological odor eliminators. These products are designed to absorb odors and minimize bacteria in the air, offering a more effective solution than traditional air fresheners. Additionally, there are odor eliminators specifically tailored for fabrics, making them suitable for use on bedding and other soft surfaces. These fabric-specific odor eliminators work by neutralizing odors at the source, rather than simply masking them with fragrances. They penetrate deep into the fibers of the fabric, eliminating any lingering smells and leaving behind a fresh and clean scent.

For soiled clothing or bedding, special laundry additives are available to effectively remove odor and stains. These additives contain enzymes that break down organic matter, such as urine or feces, and remove any associated odors. Simply add these additives to your regular laundry detergent when washing soiled items, and they will help to effectively eliminate any lingering odors and stains. It is important to note that these laundry additives are specifically formulated for use on fabric and are not recommended for use directly on the skin.

Scented Disposal Bags

For disposal purposes, scented disposal bags are handy for controlling the odor of used diapers in the trash can. They are designed for one-time use and come in dispenser boxes. Additionally, wipes play a crucial role in maintaining skin health. Adult size wipes are recommended, as they are more durable and effective in cleaning and sanitizing residue to prevent infection and irritation. Wet wipe/wash cloths are gentle cleansers that dissolve irritants by wiping. Using wipes should be one of the first steps in taking care of the skin. It’s important to choose wipes specifically designed for adults, as they are larger and more durable.

Other Cleaning Products

Additionally, there are several other strategies you can implement to combat odors and maintain a fresh and clean living environment. Surface disinfecting wipes, sprays, or cleaners are specifically formulated to eliminate germs and bacteria on frequently touched surfaces. By regularly disinfecting these areas, you can reduce the risk of spreading harmful bacteria and keep unwanted odors at bay.

In addition to using disinfecting products, it is also important to regularly ventilate the room to allow for proper airflow and circulation of fresh air. Opening windows or using fans can help to remove stagnant air and replace it with fresh, oxygenated air. This not only helps to eliminate any lingering odors but also creates a more pleasant and inviting atmosphere in your home.

A dehumidifier can be a valuable tool in reducing moisture levels in the air, which can contribute to unpleasant odors. Excess moisture in the air can lead to the growth of mold and mildew, which can produce musty smells. By using a dehumidifier, you can effectively remove excess moisture from the air, preventing the growth of these odor-causing substances and maintaining a fresh and clean living environment.

Ask The Expert: From A Doctor’s Perspective What Are Some Common Questions You Hear?

If you’ve ever sneezed and held your breath hoping for the best, you’re not alone. Bladder leaks, pelvic floor issues, and the constellation of symptoms that go with them are incredibly common — and incredibly under-discussed. We sat down with two of our favorite experts who are changing the bladder leak conversation: Dr. Barbara Frank, Attn: Grace medical advisor and board certified OB/GYN, and Dr. Sara Reardon, pelvic floor physical therapist (and the woman your pelvic floor has been waiting to meet). They took turns asking each other the questions their patients ask most — and answered them with the same candor they bring to the exam room. They cover everything from how to prepare for postpartum, to what question to ask your own pelvic floor PT, to how to manage incontinence during menopause. This is a knowledge drop you don’t want to miss.
