Top Tips For Greater Discretion

If you experience moderate to severe incontinence and use disposable absorbent products, it’s likely that you place a high emphasis on being discreet about your condition, especially in public places. Visible bulk, rustling sounds and odors from your product can cause you great embarrassment and draw unwanted attention, making you feel self-conscious.

To help you maintain your dignity and self-confidence, we’ve gathered our top tips to help you to fully participate in your daily activities, work and social gatherings, without worrying about others noticing you’re wearing an absorbent product. Maintaining privacy around your incontinence helps preserve your sense of normalcy and prevents potential stigma or uncomfortable questions from others.

Choose clothlike materials

Most absorbent products offer both clothlike and plastic-backed (also called poly-backed) options. For maximum discretion, clothlike materials are the better choice.

While many people feel more secure with plastic-backed products because they believe these items provide superior protection from leaks, the truth is, today’s clothlike materials offer the same moisture-proof protection as plastic-backed products. The key advantage of clothlike products is their softer feel and significantly quieter operation – they won’t make the revealing crinkling sounds that plastic-backed products can create during movement.

Today’s clothlike materials have advanced considerably, with some featuring breathable technology that uses microscopic pores. These pores are small enough to block liquid molecules from leaking out, while allowing fresh air to enter and circulate, which helps reduce heat and moisture buildup against the skin. This breathability makes them more comfortable to wear and creates a better environment for healthy skin, all while maintaining complete protection against leaks.

Tranquility® brand offers clothlike and breathable versions of most products, from tape-tab briefs to protective pull-on underwear to personal care pads.

Eliminate odor

Beyond reducing noise, discretion also means controlling odors that could draw unwanted attention. Today’s incontinence products feature advanced odor-control technologies, allowing you to feel confident all day long.

For instance, Tranquility products feature an innovative odor-reduction system. First, moisture is quickly wicked away from the skin and any gushes of urine are directed toward the core absorbent area by special leg cuffs called Kufguards®. Next, the superabsorbent core actively neutralizes the high pH level that gives urine its distinct foul odor. Lastly, urine and odors are locked securely in place, preventing any leakage or odor release.

This multi-layer protection system allows you to go about your daily activities without worrying about detection by others.

Find the best fit for your needs

Choosing the least bulky product that still meets your protection needs will give you the best discretion and privacy.

Tape-tab briefs tend to be the bulkiest option due to their design, which requires materials to overlap around the waist and hips to create a secure fit. Protective underwear offers a slimmer profile than tape-tab products because elastic waistbands and leg openings eliminate the need for overlapping material. Pull-ons contour more naturally to the body and are often designed with active users in mind, resulting in a more streamlined fit. Many pull-on styles also feature thinner absorbent cores, though this may mean reduced capacity compared to briefs.

Personal care pads provide even greater discretion. They are designed to be worn inside regular underwear like menstrual pads or period pads, and their slim profile makes them virtually undetectable under clothing. However, their compact size typically means lower absorbent capacity, making them more suited to manage light to moderate incontinence.

Lastly, if you experience heavier incontinence but still want discretion, consider pairing a lower-capacity brief or pull-on with a booster pad. Booster pads are thin, flow-through products that nestle inside another absorbent product to increase absorbency while maintaining a relatively slim profile. Just note that you cannot wear booster pads by themselves in regular underwear, or an accident will most likely happen.

Products made for women or men

Some absorbent products are designed with a specific audience in mind, allowing them to be naturally more discreet and comfortable. Tranquility offers two such products:

Tranquility Women’s Premium Underwear – Launched in 2025, this pull-on product delivers the same trusted protection as other premium Tranquility products, but in a black color that addresses wearers’ desire for more discreet options. More closely resembling regular underwear, this premium pull-on is designed to allow women to maintain their sense of personal style while effectively managing incontinence. Stretchy side panels provide an adjustable fit that conforms to the body, so wearers can stay active and comfortable all day.

Tranquility® Male Guard – Specifically engineered for men, with active side elastics that create a secure cup-shaped fit that moves naturally with the body while forming an effective barrier against leaks. The cloth-like, moisture-proof backing features a reliable adhesive strip that keeps the guard securely positioned in regular underwear – eliminating uncomfortable shifting, awkward readjustments and breakthrough leaks.

The Male Guard provides confident, discreet protection that allows men to maintain their active lifestyles without compromise.
