7 Questions About Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s disease can be an embarrassing condition, but it’s treatable and worth talking to your doctor about. Read below for some of the most common questions about Peyronie’s Disease.

WHAT IS PEYRONIE’S DISEASE?

Peyronies disease is a condition that affects men, and occurs when a scar-like tissue builds up in the penis. This extra tissue is called plaque, which can occur on the top, bottom or sides of the penis. This may result in the penis curving up, down, or to the side. When the plaque wraps around the penis, it may cause the penis to narrow at one end (bottle-necking), or around the middle. It may also occasionally cause indentation, resembling an hour glass.

Peyronies disease can be embarrassing for men to talk about, and for this reason it often goes untreated. It can greatly decrease quality of life and leave men feeling depressed and anxious.

WHAT CAUSES PEYRONIES DISEASE?

No one knows for sure what causes Peyronie’s disease, but it’s thought to occur following injury to the penis, often during sexual activity. Injuries during sports or other accidents may also be to blame, and some believe that in some cases it may be heredity or due to environmental factors.

IS PEYRONIES DISEASE HEREDITY?

It’s not known for sure if peyronies disease is heredity, but because the condition sometimes appears in men for no apparent reason, it is thought that genetics may be a factor.

DOES PEYRONIES DISEASE CAUSE ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION?

While Peyronie’s disease may make it difficult or painful to have an erection, it’s not the same as erectile dysfunction. A big difference is that with Peyronie’s disease, you may feel a firm lump or bump in your penis, or your penis may appear to be curved.

If this happens to you, talk to your doctor to see if you have Peyronie’s disease.

WHAT HAPPENS IF PEYRONIES DISEASE IS LEFT UNTREATED?

Peryronie’s disease can get worse if left untreated. While it might feel embarrassing to discuss, it’s important to talk to your doctor about the condition and learn what you can do about it.

Peyronie’s disase rarely goes away on it’s own. Diagnosis is typically done during a physical exam.

IS PEYRONIES DISEASE CURABLE?

If you are experiencing less severe symptoms, your doctor may recommend that you wait to perform any treatment to see if the condition goes away on it’s own. (Although it’s rare for Peyronie’s disease to go away on its own.)

If your symptoms are more severe and very bothersome, your doctor may recommend additional treatment options

HOW DO YOU TREAT/CURE PEYRONIES DISEASE?

Peyronies disease may be treated with medication or surgery. Some oral medications may be used to treat Peyronie’s disease, or your doctor may prescribe an injection, which may be given to you in the doctors office over a period of time, and is designed to break down the buildup of collagen that is causing the lumps or curving of the penis.

If you’ve had the condition for at least a year, if your penis is severely deformed, or if the condition is causing you great discomfort, surgery is also sometimes recommended.

There are several different types of surgery options, such as penile implants, incision and grafting, or suturing.

The most important thing to remember is that while it may feel embarrassing to talk about, you should discuss the condition with your doctor as soon as you can. Together, you can work out a plan for treatment. There’s no need to live with the condition.

It’s also a good idea to discuss the condition with your partner, as Peyronie’s disease can often affect a person’s sex life. Be open and honest – chances are your partner will be supportive and will be a great support for you during your treatment.

  1. Hi I am married 70 years old, until the past couple of years I have had normal sexual relations. But gradually my penis has begun to curve downwards from the middle. There is absolutely no plaque or hardness but it has shortened considerably and also has become less hard and it is affecting my marriage. I need a cure, fast.
