Take The Medtronic Bladder Quiz!

Developed in partnership with Medtronic.

Overactive bladder can be at once embarrassing as well as frustrating. The constant need to find a bathroom, (usually in a hurry) means that you’re never truly able to do the things you’d like to do. And the fear of having an accident can keep you venturing out beyond your “safe zone”. But it doesn’t have to be like that. There are treatments available (even if you think you’ve tried everything!) and there are ways to overcome the leaks. Let’s start with a quick refresher on what overactive bladder is and what causes it.

WHAT IS OVERACTIVE BLADDER?

Overactive bladder (which is also referred to as OAB), is the strong and sudden urge to pass urine. This may (and often does) happen multiple times throughout the day or night, and may be hard to control, leading to bladder leaks, or urinary incontinence.

Overactive bladder occurs when the muscles of the bladder contract involuntarily (even if you don’t have much urine in your bladder), creating the urgent need to urinate. There are many factors that may cause OAB to occur, including other conditions (like neurological conditions or diabetes), medications, aging, or even cognitive decline.

Many people start by treating OAB with behavioral changes or medications. Diet and exercise can make a big difference, and many doctors prescribe pills designed to treat OAB. But these don’t always work. And some people experience unwanted side effect that make medications not worth it to them.

NON-INVASIVE TREATMENTS

You may feel like you’ve tried everything: physical therapy, diet changes, medications, and absorbent products. These are all solutions that work well for many people, but they don’t work for everyone, and the side effects of some of these therapies may leave you feeling like you’d rather do nothing and just deal with the leaks.

But there are other options; minimally-invasive therapies that can be done quickly in a doctor’s office, and that can help you manage your leaks and provide an improved quality of life.
